CFF Joins Galactica Sites Urging Katrina Relief Assistance

Hurricane Katrina may have delivered the worst natural disaster to the shores of the United States in its history. We've all seen the pictures of the utter devastation, the houses under water, the dead, the towns and villages in its path reduced to splintered rubble, indeed wiped from the face of the earth. Even the too-recent Indonesian tsunami did not deliver this level of destruction – or this level of human suffering and need.

The people of Louisiana and Mississippi need our help. People are still dying. They need food, shelter, medicine, clothing – and they need hope. It will be weeks, even months before any semblance of normalcy returns to the area. Years, perhaps, before all is made as it was before.

We are proudly joining with these sites, organizations, and individuals in issuing the call to all fans of science fiction to contribute all they can, and contribute it now. We urge you to give to the organization of your choice, specifying "Hurricane Katrina Relief" on your donation. We urge you to check with your employer about matching contributions; many companies will match the charitable contributions of their employees.

CFF Ad To Appear in DREAMWATCH

Thanks to the generosity of a donor who wishes to remain anonymous, the CFF ad is once again going to appear in print.

Arrangements have been made with Dreamwatch magazine to run the updated ad in next month's issue of the American release of the magazine.

Look for it on newsstands on around 15 February.

This comes directly on the heels of the CFF donation to Oxfam as part of the Tsunami Relief Effort, and just goes to show what can be done when people care passionately. Remember, the Tsunami Relief effort goes on, and you can help by either making a donation directly to Oxfam, or by making a donation to the CFF, which will be turned over to Oxfam.

A warm, heartfelt thanks goes out to the anonymous donor, as well as to David Kerin, who has retooled the text of the ad to feature the Universal Studios addresses in an effort to give Tom DeSanto a little "fan push" in his efforts to pitch an animated continuation. Gracious thanks, also, to Dreamwatch for working with the CFF in the face of a tight deadline.

So, for those who still have it in 'em, mid-February would be a good time to write.

Long live Battlestar Galactica and its fans! :D

CFF Acts to Aid Tsunami Relief Effort

Colonial Fan Force President Bill Gordon (www.colonialfanforce.org) has announced that CFF is organizing an effort to help fans of the original Battlestar Galactica aid in the tsunami relief efforts in southern Asia. "This is the greatest natural disaster we've seen in many years," Gordon stated, "and we are in a position to help."

Gordon went on to announce that CFF has received a refund from Cinescape Magazine. The full-page advertisement purchased by the CFF for release in September was ultimately produced in the Winter Issue of Cinescape Magazine in late December (and is on newsstands now); Cinescape has refunded the majority of CFF's investment due to the delay in publication.

"And it couldn't have come at a more advantageous moment, as it turns out," Gordon said. "We're grateful that Cinescape values customer service they way they do. They've really been quite gracious." But the refund, representing contributions from hundreds of original Battlestar Galactica fans worldwide, initially presented a quandary to CFF's organizers. "This money was collected to pay for the ads," Gordon admitted. "There were a number of options open to us, but we have the opportunity to do some real good with this windfall."

CFF's West Coast coordinator John Pickard echoed Gordon's sentiment, adding that he expects fans to pickup the ball and run with it. "We hope the fans who stepped up for the ads will step up again," said Pickard, "and in a big way."

Gordon went on to detail the CFF's plan. "The refund from Cinescape, a total of $4,000.00 US, will be donated immediately to Oxfam," Gordon said. "Oxfam (www.oxfam.org) was selected from a number of worthy charities primarily because of their impressive track record, but also because they are a multi-national entity. We felt that was in keeping with the multi-national nature of CFF." Fans are urged to make their own contributions directly to Oxfam.

"It's also in keeping with the 'spirit' of Battlestar Galactica," Pickard said, referencing the 1978 TV series, "the strong protecting the weak, giving aid and comfort."

Gordon expressed thanks, as well, to those who are jumping in to help spread the word on short notice. "Darrell Lawrence has executed an excellent poster based on a design he and Tracy B came up with in about five minutes," he said, "and we couldn't do this at all without the help and support of a bunch of people and websites - including Tracy's 'Dirk Benedict Central' (www.dirkbenedictcentral.com), Battlestar Galactica Club (www.battlestargalacticaclub.com), The Cylon Alliance (www.cylon.org), Colonial Fleets (www.colonialfleets.com), Richard Hatch's battlestargalactica.com, and others, old friends and new, who have picked up the ball and are running with it."

Pickard agreed. "The fans of Battlestar Galactica usually come through when they have the chance," he said.

The Colonial Fan Force was originally formed in the spring of 2004 to raise money for the purchase of full-page ads in Daily Variety and Cinescape magazine. The ads were intended to send a message of support to series creator Glen A. Larson (who holds the movie rights to the Battlestar Galactica franchise) and X-Men Producer Tom DeSanto, whose efforts to create a television continuation of the original Galactica were unfortunately derailed. The campaign successfully raised $12,000 for the purchase of the ads.

CFF Ads Published, Writing Now Main Mission

With the publishing of the CFF ad in Daily Variety on 17 September 2004, and the imminent release of the Fall issue of Cinescape magazine, the focus of the CFF mission has shifted from fundraising to letter writing. That according to CFF President Bill Gordon.

"Now that the ads are out there, there is increasing awareness of this effort," said Gordon. "There's been a small spike in hits at the CFF website, and we expect that to increase once Cinescape hits the stands."

Gordon notes that this is not the time for fans to sit back and rest on the laurels of their fundraising victory. "The ads were always considered just to be 'phase one,'" Gordon said. "The fans knew from the beginning that once the ads hit, it was going to be time to write start writing the letters we urged in the ads. That time has come. That time is now."

For those who just don't have the time to compose an original letter or postcard, the CFF has prepared form letters which can be downloaded from the CFF website at the following links:

Glen A. Larson

Tom DeSanto

For those who would rather write an original letter or postcard, the addresses are as follows:

Mr. Glen A. Larson
c/o Shapiro-Lichtman, Inc.
8827 Beverly Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90048

Mr. Tom DeSanto
c/o William Morris Agency
One William Morris Place
Beverly Hills, CA 90212

"I feel good about where the campaign is right now," added Gordon. "Hollywood has seen firsthand evidence of the continued devotion to the original, true Battlestar Galactica, and soon, through Cinescape, everyday fans will become aware of what we're trying to accomplish." Gordon says he expects the word to be spread through other sources, as well. "Within two weeks of the ad coming out," said Gordon, "some enterprising entrepreneur was already selling copies of the Daily Variety ad on eBay."

"But the main thing, right now," summarized Gordon, "is for everybody to write. And that's the message I'm trying to get out right now."
